Ceramics - question

Expert: Leisha Hiester - 2/15/2009

Question
I just asked a question to someone else - but also forgot to ask this - When glaze firing - do you leave the top hold on the side of the kiln open for the entire time or do you close all holes when firing?

Thanks
Elaine Zobro

Answer
Elaine,
Once you've already bisque fired your pieces, you're past the possibility of anything blowing up. Glaze firing is usually much more straightforward than biscuit firing.  The glaze firing is simply intended to bring the glaze to a temperature when it will ‘flux’ or melt, forming a permanent coating. This means that you do not have to start a glaze firing slowly. Hope this helps, Leisha
