Ceramics - small hand painted platter

Expert: Leisha Hiester - 3/30/2009

Question
QUESTION: I have a small platter that says it is hand painted and some other writing on the
back but I can't make it out. It also has a R in the corner. Here is a picture of it.
It looks to be old because it has like old age cracks. It is not chipped anywhere
and I would like to know if you could tell me anything about it. Thanks Valerie

ANSWER: Valerie,
The photo wasn't attached. Can you try to resend? Thanks. Leisha

QUESTION: Here is a picture of it. Thank you

ANSWER: Valerie,
Do you have a picture of the back? Markings? Potteries and artists are identified by their marks.
Do you know where you acquired it?

QUESTION: There is writing on the back and I can only make out hand painted and it has a
capital R in the corner besides all the writing. Where I got  it is Good will

Answer
Valerie,
It appears to be a handmade platter made by an artist. Without being able to read the writing, it's hard to tell who. There are 'crackle' glazes that provide the appearance of age. If you can blow up or do a macro of the writing it may provide more clues. The "R" is probably an initial of the person who painted it. Sorry I can't be of more help. Leisha
