Ceramics - ceramic chess pieces

Expert: Leisha Hiester - 4/6/2009

Question
I would like to make a chess set of ceramic chess pieces averaging 3 inch high pieces. Is there any particular product you would recommend in which I could use my kitchen oven to harden the ceramic? I am new to ceramics.

Answer
David,
Do you have a craft store near you? Hobby Lobby or Michael's, even JoAnn Fabrics? These type stores often carry a self hardening or bake in the oven type clay, but I am wondering if this type of clay will suit your purpose long-term. This type of clay is not very durable. You may want to use pottery clay or hand-building clay from a local ceramics supplier and have your pieces fired in a kiln. Your local ceramics supplier will know someone in your area who fires for people. If you're still at a loss, write again, tell me where you're located and I'll provide you with some in your region. Happy Gaming, Leisa
