Ceramics/kilns

Question
Can you help with how to select a brand of ceramic kiln.  I know the size, etc I need but I have looked everywhere to try and find out if certain brands are more recommended by potters.  They are all starting to look alike!

Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer
Dana,
It can be overwhelming selecting a kiln. Alot depends on what type of work you do and what you're trying to achieve. Every potter I know has a different kiln, different wheel, different clay. It can be as personal as selecting your car. It is a major purchase similar to a car, so you do want to take a test drive. Is there a potters organization near you? A supplier? Often they will rent you kiln space in their kilns and this is a great way to try out before you buy.
Are you a hobbyist of professional? Do you throw or handbuild? Functional or decorative? Large pieces or small? All of these are factors to consider when selecting a kiln. Gas or electric? I have 2 electric kilns because I fire mid-range electric glazes, but I also have a pit fire kiln I've built.
Let me know some of your specifics and I'll try to make a better recommendation. :) Leisha
