Ceramics - material used?

Expert: Leisha Hiester - 5/30/2009

Question
This small, 4" x 4" pot encircled by four cherubs has a bronze finish, but where is is chipped on the bottom, it shows through gray.  It's heavy, feels, and when tapped, sounds, metallic.  It has clay-tool marks and looks like it was sculpted from a lump of clay. Is it just some mass-produced thing?  Can you tell, possibly, what it is made of?  It is a bit shinier and much more bronze than it appears in the image I've attached.  Thank you very much for your time, and any information you might be able to pass along about it.  Best regards, Joanna

Answer
Joanna,
It's difficult to tell from the photo, but I am doubtful it is bronze. A piece like this made in bronze would be quite heavy and pricey. Bronze would not be gray internally. It is probably a manufactured poly-type product that was molded. Hope this helps. Leisha
