Question
Sam, I'm looking for my first kiln (used) and see kilns rated at cone 6 but capable of a max temp around 2300-2400 degrees, and others in that range rated cone 10.  Can you explain?

Answer
The maximum temp. the kiln can be fired to is always indicated on the kiln. Cone 10 is stoneware at around 1260degC(celcius)

Here is a temp. converter, http://www.wbuf.noaa.gov/tempfc.htm

Buy a kiln that will handle firings higher than you want to fire to, of course stoneware(cone 9 and up) is the highest.

Do not buy a second hand kiln that you cannot try out before you buy. Gas kilns are usually ok but electric can be worn out and the elements no longer efficient(need replacing).

LOOK FOR RUST in the metal body of the kiln, if you are going to pick it up with a fork lift or what ever you don't want it to fall apart because of general condition of the kilkn body.
