Ceramics/Nova Kilns
Expert: Leisha Hiester - 9/13/2009
QuestionI found a small Nova Kiln at a rummage sale yesterday, and it really didn't come with any information. The shape of it reminds me of a space capsule. I have found after a couple of test firings that it can go up to a cone 6 within two hours. Unfortunately, that is the only information. The coils are within the insulation which seems to be a fabric type but I don't know what it is made out of. It has no controls on it, it is just a plug and go type of kiln, but I am wondering what would be the best way to bisque fire earthen ware in this type of a kiln? I've tried to bisque a couple of pieces, but within 15 minutes the pieces explode. Any information that could be given about the kiln itself, and the best way to bisque fire a piece would be great. Thank you. Bob Jennings.
AnswerBob,
Sound like you may have a doll or test kiln. Why don't you contact a kiln supplier;

and inquire with them. I heard about these kilns years ago and I heard about potters using them for Raku and other uses, but I've never seen one.
Try L&L or one of the reputable suppliers. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
