Question

Brush Pot
I bought this at a house cleaning sale and it was sitting on a shelf in a garage.  It caught my eye because its odd shape.  I noticed it had a stamp on the bottom "Brush Quality USA" in a painters palate and numberal "05" outside of it.  I offered a dollar and got it.  I am looking for some infortmation on it regarding the age, what it would be used for and value.  It has only slight chipping around the inside lip and crazing is minimal.  I do believe it is a Brush-McCoy from some quick research I did.  Also what does the 05 mean?  I assume this is not the year as this house and everything in it was quite old.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

Answer
Dear Andrew,
What a great find! I love Brush McCoy and have a small collection. It is an odd shape that I have not seen before. It appears to be what was common in those days; a planter of some sort. To give you an idea of the timeframe; George Brush became general manager and shareholder in the J.W. McCoy Pottery Company after losing his pottery to a fire in 1909. In 1911 The J.W. McCoy Pottery Company changed its name to the "Brush-McCoy Pottery Company." The McCoy name and interest in the new company continued until J.W. McCoy's death. Shortly there after the name was again changed, this time to "Brush Pottery Co." in 1925.
