Ceramics/Limoges Tankard with hole

Question

Hole in tankard
I recently won a beautiful hand painted Limoges pitcher (Tankard)  in an antique auction and discovered a hole in the bottom of it.  I can't find any information as to why and can't find any others out there that have a hole.  My only guess is that someone may have been trying to wire it as a lamp.  Any idea what it may be for and/or what I can do to fill it?   I have attached a picture.  Thank you for any effort you might give.  Sincerely, Carla

Answer
Carla,
It's hard to tell what/why someone would drill a hole like this. My guess is as good as yours; probably for a lamp. Are you wanting to fill the hole to actually use the tankard? A general rule of thumb, particularly if it is a Limoge and an antique is to leave it alone. Often attempts at repairs like this devalue the piece. You may wish to consult with an antique expert prior to attempting any fill. Hope this helps,
Leisha
