Ceramics/repainting an old plaster nativity

Question
QUESTION: Hi, my mom has an old nativity set which she believes is made of plaster.  It is about 60 years old.  The paint is chipping badly on most of the figurines and she would like to get it restored or repainted.  Any suggestions on A) how to do it ourselves if possible or B) where to take it to get it done professionally?

Thank you!

ANSWER: Dear Marge,

Are you sure it is plaster or possibly ceramic? The first step is to determine wether it truly is plaster or ceramic. Can you write me back and tell me where you're located? I can then recommend a reputable resource for you.

QUESTION: Hi Leisha,

It is possible that it is ceramic, I'm not sure quite how to tell.  My mom is in Vero Beach Florida.  I'd love a recommendation for a reputable resource...she's 92 so i'd like to have it done over for her :)

thanks for your help!
