Cheerleading/Basing

Question
Well this is my second year cheering and I've always been a back spot or front spot. This time they put me as a base and even though I'm good and i can get my flyer up to a half and a full I'm terribly afraid. I don't want to drop her and have it be my responsibility. My flyer has known me for years and she is one of my bestfriend's but she keeps telling me she doesn't trust me yet which makes me more nervous. She doesn't lock her legs when she goes up to a full/extension and she wobbles alot. Her halves are perfect. I don't want to be afraid anymore and i want my flyer to trust me not to drop her. She has never fallen.

Answer
Hello Marisa,

First of all, you need to know that everyone is nervous when they try a new position while stunting, whether it be basing, flying or back spotting!  It just takes practice.  The more you do it, the more comfortable you will be.  I wish there was a magical trick I could tell you to make you more comfortable.  One thing you should know is that when a flyer is falling, the backspot is the most important position, since she is responsible for the head and neck of the flyer.  If you were a backspot, then your job now is easier when it comes to falling.  Also,  it is harder to drop a flyer than it is to catch her.  Because of the position of your hands and arms, the flyer will automatically fall right down into them.  As long as you don't close your eyes and walk away, you will be fine!

I'm sure you are a great base.  If you can get her to a half and full, then you have proven yourself.  Have confidence!  You will be great:)
