Cheerleading/Back handsprings

Question
Hey I'm so scared to throw my back handspring I can tumble real well, its just back handsprings freak my out. When I attempt I guess I get afraid of going in a backwards motions. It would help me so much if you have any tricks, tips, advice, ect. of getting over my fear.

Hey. Sorry it took so long. The only real advice I can tell you is to do it a bunch of times with a spot. Eventually, the spot will be less needed. When I was first learning how to tumble backwards, I'd have to tell myself to just do it and not freak out in mid air. Because if you freak out, the spotter can't help you as much. Something else that helped me was to do the motion of a back handspring before actually throwing it so that you know you can at least go in that motion. Also, make sure you just keep your arms locked at all times.

Experience

I was a gymnast for a couple of years. I've been cheerleading my whole life was a varsity cheerleader for Mountain View High School who had received second place in NCA Nationals in 1995 and first place in the Everett Salute to Spirit Dance and Cheer Competition in 2006 and tied for fourth place in state for 2007. I am now at a brand new high school called Union High School. My squad has won 1st place in Washingtons WIAA Salute To Spirit in the small varsity division
