Question
Hi my name is Aisha and I am 20 years old and want to start a cheerleading team for girls at high schools in the area. I want to do this because there are a lot of girls that doesn't have anything to do after cheerleading for basketball is over and really I want to try to decrease the pregnancy rate of some of these young girls. I have no cheerleading experience but I have been to several games and actually did the cheerleaders cheers. How is it that I can go about this because I have even tried to have the girls cheer for an AAU team but I don't know how to do it financially.

Answer
Well, if you want them to compete it's very difficult if you're not involved with a school, all-star gym, or some other program. But if you just want to work together, learn cheers and chants, and give them something to do then it should be something you can make happen.

First you need to find a place to practice. You also need to consider insurance. This of course depends on if it's a formal thing or not. If you just have girls get together informally a few times a week then I suppose insurance isn't very important. But you will need a place to practice. If you need to stunt this is a little bit difficult. But if you just want to work on cheers then you don't need mats or grass or anything.

Something you may want to consider would be getting the girls together, putting a routine together, and performing for parents, friends, etc. Just an exhibition type thing to give the girls something to work towards. You could just have them wear white shirt/black shorts so they look similar (and most people already have those) and won't have to buy a uniform.

If you want a more formal thing and need to raise money I have some fundraiser ideas. If that's the case let me know and I'll pass those on to you. If you need to get the word out maybe start a group on Facebook, get an email list going around, word of mouth, newspaper ads, etc.

Let me know if I touched on anything that you want more details on and I'll do my best to answer. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask a follow-up.

I can answer questions on tryouts, coaching, general cheerleading, etc. I cannot answer questions on co-ed stunts/pyramids or tumbling. Experience

I've been cheerleading for 10 years. My teams consistently competed at the national level, placing many times. I've coached for the past 5 years, and the team I coached most recently became National Champions. I've cheered at the Pop Warner, High School, and All-Star levels. I coach alongside my mother and sister who have coached at the all-star level as well. I've been watching cheerleading since I was 4, and I can create routines, give advice, and help teach kids how to deal with competitions. I have a knack for coaching and giving advice. I'm always the coach designated to give the pep talks to the kids before competitions.

Education/Credentials
I have been living with cheerleading coaches for 10+ years which teaches more than anyone can imagine. I was captain of my Varsity High School squad which came with the responsibility of picking music, writing a cheer, creating and teaching the routine, and making the formations. I have also coached nationally ranked teams for 5 years.
