Cheerleading/Starting a squad

Question
Hello, I'm looking to start a squad in my area. Could you tell me what I need to get started? I'm wanting to do an all star squad that competes at jamfest and a few other competitions. I am certified. I just don't know how to go about doing this. Could you please help?

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

Essentially, you need to find a place to practice, get some kids who are willing to pay to cheer, get insurance and get to it! I know I've made it seem incredibly simple, and its not that simple, but those are the main things. After that you can worry about music, a routine, uniforms, etc etc. I would suggest your first step to be sending flyers all over town to schools, dance studios, the YMCA, park district, gymnastic teams, hang them in the library, community center, send notices to the newspaper. Set up a meeting/open gym to see how many people are interested. Rent a space somewhere to hold the meeting, or even have it at a restaurant. Once you have some kids willing, book a place to practice. You'll need mats, so your best option is the YMCA, park district, gymnastics gym, or school. Then make sure you get insurance! Hope this helps you out! Good Luck.
Happy Cheering!
