Cheerleading/Do Super Bowl Dancers Get Paid?

Question
Would someone please settle a bet for me.  While watching the Super Bowl last night, my roommate and I commented on the dancers during the pre-game show, particularly in the Sting segment.  She thinks that since it's an honor to be involved with such an event, they perform for free.  I feel that they must get paid some amount, even if it's just a stipend.  Could some settle this for us?  Do the dancers get paid, or is it on a volunteer basis?

Thanks so much,
Katie

Answer
CHEERS, Katie!
It's so interesting that you asked that question, because I was actually one of the performers in the halftime show and I know plenty about all the superbowl extras. Everyone involved in the Super Bowl, from the pre-game dancers, to the halftime casted audience, all performed for free (sorry, your roommate wins this one!) There was an open call in the local area for anyone who wanted to be involved. Now, for the pre-game dancers, they had to audition to actually be chosen to perform, whereas the halftime performers were all allowed to be in it. The pre-game dancers were mostly high-school and college dance teams, and some cheerleading squads and the like. Although we probably SHOULD have gotten some money for all the work we did, no one performing as an extra in the Super Bowl got paid a single penny. We did, however, get special "Goodie Bags" with t-shirts and everything in it. The halftime coordinators said that our payment was "being a part of the biggest Superbowl ever!" And we did all get a free concert. But no, no money was involved at all, it was strictly volunteer.
I hope that helps to settle your bet! If you have any further questions or comments about the Super Bowl, pre-game, or halftime, I'd be more than happy to help you out! Have a great day!

Expertise

I have been a cheerleader for over 10 years: All-Stars, Junior Varsity, and Varsity. Currently, I am Captain of the Spirit All-Stars, and I`m on my school`s elite Varsity squad. I`ve attended NCA Cheer Camp for the past four years. My coach now is a former NCA Staff member, and she has given me extensive knowledge on the sport and everything about it. I spend, on average, 15-20 hours a week cheerleading. I`m a veteran of competitions and have many tips that can definitely help to improve any cheerleader! I`d be more than happy to offer any help concerning any aspect of the sport.

Experience

My varsity squad has never gotten lower than second place in any competition for the past ten years. This year, we will be attending the Big Apple Classic in the heart of New York City. Two years ago, we took first place at this competition. We look forward to this challenge!
