Cheerleading/back handspring landing

Question
QUESTION: Hi! I can do a back handspring on the spring floor at my gymnastics center almost perfectly, but when i try to do it on the grass I ALWAYS land on my knees and I don't know why. Do you know what I am doing wrong? if so do you know how to help me. I REALLY REALLY need help!!!! :)

ANSWER: Hey Laurel,

I guess my first question is why do you need your bhs on the grass? You have to be careful on grass and sand especially, because they can be unstable, slippery, and potentially injure you (trust me, I've seen it) But, if this is something you're worried about, it sounds to me like you're not blocking off the ground with your shoulders enough. When you're on the spring floor, it takes less effort because of the springs. Anywhere non-spring will take more effort in those shoulder pops to push off the ground and get those feet down. Your next step? Work on shoulder pops on any non-spring surface. If you don't know how to do these, ask around, and someone will be able to show you. But, always remember to Be Careful when not on mats! Good Luck! Let me know how it goes.

QUESTION: thanks that makes sense. i guess what i really need is my bhs on the track.(because that is where we cheer) but i'v never tryed it on the track because every time we're there we are cheering at a game. so i don't really no the difference between the grass and the track because i'v only done it on the grass.i'v u have any tips for doing it on the track that would be even better. thanks!

Answer
Hey,

Well the track is just like regular ground, so the advice I gave you before still stands - work on shoulder pops on a non-spring surface, i.e. the grass, flat mats, track, etc. Once your shoulders get stronger, you'll have no problem doing your bhs on a track or grass. Biggest thing to remember is you need more power when you're not on a spring floor, so get that power and use it! Good Luck!
