Cheerleading - streching for a flyer

Expert: Kiki Quach - 4/16/2007

Question
My daughter wants to be a flyer. She is very thin but has lost some of her flexibility. Do you know any good stretches she can do to help her become more flexible? Do you know a good dvd, book or website?  She quit level 7 gymnastics last October. I know she can do it. It has just been so long I don't want her to get hurt.Is there anything she should be doing?

Answer
Hey.
Well you're daughter could use the gravity to her advantage. Like stand, feet together and bend down to stretch in the pike position. Stand with legs a little further than shoulder length and bend down in the middle, then walk over to the right, then the left, then back to the middle. Also, stretching in just the normal stretches (straddle, pike, splits, etc) help as well.

Make sure she warms up well before she stretches and also that she doesn't push herself too far which could result in a pulled muscle.

Hope this helped!

Love always, Kiki Quach
