Cheerleading/tuck trouble

Question
I have been working on getting my back tuck for a while, and my tumbling coach says I have the power, but I travel too far back.  I have real trouble with going straight up for my tuck, and I usually throw my head back.  I know what my problem is, but how can I stop my self from traveling backwards in my tucks? Are there any drills I can do to practice and improve? Thanks so much!

Answer
Hi Emma!

If you are throwing your head back during your standing tucks (which is a common problem) you should practice spotting something that is a little higher than your line of vision.  For example if you are facing a wall look at a poster, or sticker, or something.  When you jump up to do the tuck continue to look at this object until you can't see it anymore.  This will help you get the most height without throwing your head back.

Also, when you "swing" for the tuck and you take your hands above your head if you will hit a "touchdown" motion as you jump up it will keep you from traveling backward.

I hope this advice helps and let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.
