Question
I need to interview an engineer for a class at the university where I attend.  I would appreciate it if you could answer the following questions for me, or just tell me a little bit about yourself and your career.
What was your first job upon graduation?
What type of job do you perform now?
What have you done in your career thus far and what do you hope to do?
What is your favorite aspect of the engineering field?
What was the most difficult task you ever encountered in engineering?
What engineering skills do you use most?
What advise do you have for engineering students in general?

Answer
Hello Ramon.
Straight into your questions one at a time.

What was your first job upon graduation?>>>>>>>>>>

Got a job in a mineral processing plant in South Africa.
We were producing pure electrolitic Copper, Nickel plates.
(Copper&Nickel produced with metal atoms deposited to a plate by means of electrolysis)
Size of Plates was approx. 1mX1mX1cm.
This plates were chopped into cigarette box size thin plates (1cm thickness. And was sold to USA.
I was a new engineer that I shall never forget.
In the evening news in 1985 Pres. Ronald Reagan said "We will continue to apply trade sanctions to South Africa"
And the following morning at work in the plant I saw the address on the Nickel drums as Portland/Oregon..
Train came into the factory and we loaded the metals to be shipped to the USA. So sometimes being an engineer enables you to gather inside information no matter what cacaphony goes on outside..

What type of job do you perform now? >>>>

Not much Chemical engineering nowadays.
I am trying to design an automated parking system in shopping centers.  Well a cheap and effective system of course as the imports will be prohibitively expensive.
However Chemical Engineering education enables a person to see the problems as whole first then break down to it components to solve it in a systematic manner.
Therefore you may come across Chemical Eng graduates spread over many areas that may seems irrelevant to the their profession and Yet Chem  eng s perform successfully

What have you done in your career thus far and what do you hope to do? >>>>>>>

I worked as research engineer as well as production engineer. Later project design, management, sales etc. Many different aspects an engineer may find himself to work.
What is your favorite aspect of the engineering field? >>>>>
Bringing man and machinery together as giant plants and see them producing goods which will better lives of the people.

What was the most difficult task you ever encountered in engineering? >>>>>>

Dealing with humans are difficult.
An engineer is driven by technical facts. Whereas in a company environment many things are not so clear and simple.
Politics may involve, You may draw wrath of some people.
You may find many people outside contractors as well inside staff technically not very competitive and yet they make decisions.

What engineering skills do you use most? >>>>

Surely a solid understanding of engineering concepts gives a big confidence during interaction with others.
Computer knowledge, Engineering drawing also helps a lot.
An engineers deals woth many people and frequenty he may want to resort to some kind of drawing or sketch.
Eng Drawing skill helps there.
What advise do you have for engineering students in general
Usually blue collar families' childeren choose to go engineering studies.
You have to have the right character to be a good engineer.
Similar to Military, Teaching, Art subjects.
If you have a soft side to care for weak, and sick etc don't enroll in military academy.
Ebgineering is similar. You become a man of facts.
Was today a warm day? Or was it perhaps cold?
Eerrr,mmmmmhh, maybe...I dunnoooo...'m not sure...etc..
Whether it was warm or cold may be debatable. This subject of politicians, salesmen, Doctors, or lawyers etc.
But for engineers approaching to this subject goes like this. Today Average temp was 20C with lowest being 15C and highest 25. Full Stop.
Can we perhaps pass a favor to someone make highest temp as 26C?  No! Impossible. Not in million years.
So that kind of approach is a major difference between lets say Engineers and doctors,Lawyers.
When an engineer makes a mistake usually it will be there for everyone to see. Like Challenger exploding in sky.
So you have to check all the way what you are saying and what you are doing as an engineer.
You can have playing room only within the confines of technical restrictions.
Lawyers are a little different.
Your client may be sentenced to electrical chair but as lawyer you will still pocket your fee.
The same goes with doctors. The patient may die yet they still want their money.
So from this angle Engineers will not earn as much money as the other two.
Most of the engineers earn what their salary is within a company structure.
Whereas Lawyers and doctors can always dip their hands into people's pockets.
People with their half truths discuss many technical subjects with engineers with heated passion. And engineers do enjoy that. Hey everybody please come and ask if you want to know anything about everything..
And free of charge of course..
In case of Medical and legal professions. people have to make appointment and pay for it for a limited period of time with no guarantee for the results.

Thank you.
