Question
I am going to buy a geiger counter, and would like to knoe if the old yellow counters work withiut a probe attached to them.

Answer
Unfortunately, it will depend on the model.  Unless you are looking at one that can be demonstrated as working, I would avoid it.  Parts are no longer available so fixing it will be almost impossible.  These guys agree.  If you are looking at a surplus one, avoid it.  Almost all of these at a surplus sale will not work properly.  To be sure, you may want to call the last company listed.  They still over these.
