Chemicals/Fuses

Question
I am an author and am writing a book where the lead character needs to slow down the fuse of a firework.  Is there any chemical compound or substance I could have my character put on the fuse to slow it down?

Thanks!

Jeff

Answer
This is not my area at all so these are guesses in the MacGyver mold.  Nail polish, spray paint, spray glue, melted caramel, dense sugar water, etc.  It will all depend on the type of fuse.  There are some fuses that you can cut a section out and they don't stop (the fire jumps the gap).  You might want to contact some fireworks manufacturers and do a good google search on fuse construction.
