Chemicals/PH levels Effect on iron and copper

Question
At what PH levels does iron and copper start to corrode?  I'm doing a expirement for my 6th grade daughter.  Using muratic acid and red devil lye.  These chemicals are so caustic that I stopped the experiment.  Your help is greatly appreciated..

Answer
These will corrode at almost any pH.  The key is time.  Lower pHs will do it faster.  Some may be days, some years.  Also, don't confuse dissolving of the metal in acid with corrosion.  Corrosion is the formation of iron and copper oxide by reaction with oxygen in the air.  Acid or base may just facilitate the reaction, not cause it.
