Chemicals/Science - Metals Present In A Compound.

Question
Hello.
I was wondering if you knew of another test similar to the flame test that will identify which metal is present in a compound?

Answer
Hi, and thanks for your question.

To be honest, a flame test is probably the best generalised approach to identifying metals. The only other common method of identifying metals (in solution) is to pass hydrogen sulfide gas through them and identify the colour of the metal sulfide. However, hydogen sulfide is slightly more toxic than hydrogen cyanide, so this isn't the safest option!

If you know which metal you're trying to identify, however, there are specific tests.
