Chemicals/Solvents

Question
Hi,
Would you know which is the best solvent for dissolving sticky / glue'y substances, and where I could buy it - as a consumer without access to laboratory suppliers.
The sticky stuff I refer to would be the glue used on self-adhesive cup-holders, non-water based glue used for vinyl carpets - and no, it does not say on the glue can ;-)...).

From my chemistry lessons I seem to recall that it should be chloro-organic based, but I cannot recall a specific name, nor do I know where to get hold of it in the UK

Thanks in advance
Riko

Answer
The first two to try are rubbing alcohol and fingernail polish remover. There is also a product at hardware stores called Goo-Gone for different types of glue from the other two. These three work for most things so try these first.  Also try the label aisle in a place like Office Depot.  I think they sale label glue remover now.

If you need to go further you can go to the hardware store and ask them to show you the solvents.  Solvents such as acetone work on some types.  You can also try in the PVC pipe aisle, the  materials that dissolves PVC pipe so it canned be glued together (note, some of these have colorant which may ruin your item, look for colorless).

Bottom line, glues and sticky things come in many varieties and one solvent will not work on all.  You also need to be aware that some of these solvent will ruin the item itself, so be very careful.  Lastly, all of the above have hazards.  Only buy what you know you will use.  Read the labels and store them properly, they are all combustible.  Only use them in a well ventilated area, away from any flame or electrical source.  Bottom line, be careful or don't use them.

Lastly, for some things like a cupholder, a soak in hot soapy water or a run through the dishwasher will loosen the glue enough that you can get it off with a rag and some rubbing.  Try that if the item can be washed.
