Question
This is a "nugget" from my teacher.  It is not required but i like to do them.  After searching many web sites [google, lycos, altavista, eduseek, etc]  i am still searching for the answer to this question:  How many different chemical compounds have been discovered by chemical science?  I have found conflicting answers from 10 million to 36 million and a new one being created every nine seconds.  What is your answer?  I am in grade 6; the course is science.

Answer
Around 20 million not counting sequences.  Around 5 million commercially available.

Remember, these are just the ones registered with CAS.  Many more have been made that are never registered because they were never fully characterized.
