Question
Hello: Is it advisable to use a small amount of bleach in the toilet bowl to save on water usage? Say 1/2 cup.I was told that urine and bleach would form a dangerous gas.I have two toilets, and have tried this method, using one toilet for urination (adding bleach),and the other for defecation, which is flushed immediately.I have found I can cut flushes in the urine use toilet to once every couple of days.
Thanks

Answer
Bleach should never be mixed with urine or any other nitrogen species (this include ammonia or ammonia cleaners).  There is a chance the gases (called chloroamines will be produced) and they can be deadly.  If you disinfect with bleach, you should only do it with clean water in the toilet.  What you are doing is probably not as bad as mixing bleach with straight ammonia, but it is not a good idea.  You still would be breathing small amounts of the chloroamines.
