Chemistry (including Biochemistry)/Odor Elimination

Question
Hello - Will you please help me with information on how to permanently (or periodically, if necessary) eliminate odors from the inside of old leather, fabric-lined suitcases?

I live in a rural area and want to use them for rodent-proof storage of delicate textiles and documents. I figure that the chemist in you is able to imagine the smell even if you're not old enough to be familiar with it!

I've tried airing them out in full sun for days, and considered coffee grounds but would rather hear from you first. Thanks for your consideration of this request. - Cindy

Answer
Short of replacing the fabric lining, I doubt you are going to get all the odor out.  Instead of coffee grounds you need to find a water treatment store or aquarium store that sells "activated carbon",  It will work much better than the coffee.  You may have to do it several times and use more than you think.  However, the smell could be from mold, which will be hard to remove or in the leather which will hold it for years.
