Question
I have been asked to find out if you can only win a game of chess by a checkmate or is there another way of winning?

Answer
Dear Linda,

That is correct. You can only win a game of chess by checkmate. In tournament competitions or games where a clock is used, however, you can also lose if you run out of time. You can also win a game if your opponent resigns or gives up.

Warmly
