Chess - king being in check

Expert: Chuck Kinzie - 8/29/2008

Question
when in check can the king take the piece that put him in check?

Answer
Hi Damian!

Thank you for your question.

Yes, the King can take the piece that put him in check.  The only exception is that the King cannot take the piece if the piece delivering the check is itself defended.  In other words, if a King is in check, it cannot move to a square that is also being attacked by an enemy piece.

Hope I answered your question.  Enjoy your chess!

Your chess friend,

Chuck
