My question concerns the format of chess championships and tournaments, for a story that I'm writing. Which tournaments/championships take place on a stage, in front of a large audience, and not in multi-player multi-table settings? Is it only the world championship that is held on a stage, or other tournaments too?

Many large chess tournaments have the top boards play on stage as well as other matches between players as in qualifying matches leading to choose contenders for the world championship.
