Question Hi Wuyanbu
My question concerns the format of chess championships and tournaments, for the sake of a story that I'm writing. Which tournaments/championships take place on a stage, in front of a large audience, and not in multi-player multi-table settings? Is it only the world championship that is held on a stage, or other tournaments too?
THANK YOU!
Answer Hello,
This is an intriguing question.
Many tournaments large and small have players on stage.
But, not many organizers use the stage to place the top players.
As you can imagine, the more prestigious the event, the bigger the deal it is on being on stage. It means you are a contender. The most recent use of a stage I've seen are at USCF National Scholastic Championships. They have the stage, as well a large demo chess board with magnificent trophies all around for the eventual champions.
Players look calm up there. Some relish it and some melt under the lights. I recall a game when a 2400 was playing an expert (2000)in a late round of a national scholastic championship tournament. The 2400 played what looked like a brilliant combination. But, it quickly fizzled out and he lost.
I think he undertook the combination to "play to the crowd."
Me. I'm nervous, but I'm up there trying to prove I belong on that stage and win. I've been up on stage only twice and loved it.
