Question
the best first 5 moves

Answer
Hi James,

The best first 5 moves in chess are:

1.e4
1.d4
1.c4
1.Nf3
1.b3

If you mean however, 5 moves consecutively, this is not possible to know as there would be untold millions of variations.

If you follow standard opening principles, you would want to:

- Control the squares e4/d4/e5/d5 with pawns.
- Develop your Knights toward the center before your Bishops.
- Develop your Bishops to open diagonals.
- Castle within the first 12 moves if you can.

Regards,

Len
