Question
1.e4 c5
2.e5 ?
What is wrong with e5 for white and give me the line up to move 10.

Answer
Hi Jerry,

The problem with 2.e5 is that Black can play this:

2...Nc6
3.f4 (if Nf3, then it will be difficult to hold on to the advanced pawn)
3...d5
4.c3 Nh6
5.Be2 Qb6
6.Nf3 Bg4
7.d3 e6
8.Na3 Be7
9.0-0 Nf5
10.h3 Bxf3

It's like a good French Defense for Black. If White takes the d pawn with 4.e:d e.p. then Q:d6 and Black gains another tempo.  Also, if 2.e5 was any good, GMs would play it - I've never seen one GM game featuring it.

Regards,

Len
