Hi Daniyal,

The general consensus backed by statistical data is that the best first move for White is either 1.e4 or 1.d4 though there are other good moves as well like 1.c4, 1.Nf3.  All of these moves can transpose into the same lines depending on how play progresses.

It's a matter of style as to which you choose to go with.  For learning about the opening and how to play it correctly including move by move details (variations), I recommend that you get one of these books (or if possible, get both):

As for a developing a repertoire, you should open with 1.e4 as White, and as Black, open like this:

1.e4 e5 Defend Ruy Lopez and other open-type positions
1.d4 d5 Defend Queen's Gambit Declined Slav Variation
1.c4 or Nf3 Defend using symmetrical-type positions

The two books I recommended above, will teach you how to properly play the resulting positions and the ideas behind each specific opening.

Regards,

Len
