Why is it important to have a good opening?

Could you clarify your question?
It is typically a good idea to know an opening well (e.g. typical pawn structures, plans, etc.), as well as good general opening principles (e.g. control of the center, development, etc.) Maybe I can be of more help if you are more specific.
