I am looking to join a chess club in my area. Is their any clubs that I can join in Des Plaines. I would also like to participate in tournaments.

The best place to find chess clubs are at the United States Chess Federation's website uschess.org There you'll find state and national tournaments listed.
If there aren't chess clubs listed, check your local library/newspapers to see if there are any clubs in your city. If not start one!
I just helped a friend start a club in New Philadelphia, Ohio.
I suggested she to go to a library and ask them to use a meeting room once a week. You can find her comments and others who want to start clubs at ohiochess.org (on the fourm)
