Chevrolet/98 Chevy Malibu noisy

Question
I drive a 98 chevy malibu that once I place it in drive and take off, I hear a loud humming should (almost like a motocyle).  You only hear it when driving but not when it is in park.  It feels like the tranmission may not be shifting but I'm no sure.

Answer
Watch your rpm guage. How high does it go before it shifts and how far are you pushing the gas pedal?

Are you sure the sound you hear is not a wheel bearing? Next time you hear the sound, take your foot off the gas and shift into neutral while at speed and coast. If the sound goes away, its your tranny. If it's still there, its probably a wheel bearing.
