The battery light recently came on--what would this typically indicate, and how much should I expect for repair?

Answer
It means either the alternator or battery have called it quits.

Generally if the alternator goes it means you're running on battery power alone which means you will need to replace the battery in the near future due to the stress on it.

You will have to remove the alternator and take it to your local parts place for them to test it. There are a number of places that will do it for free.
