I don't have a a Camaro or Firebird but you may still be able to help.

The transmission in my GMC pickup is the problem.  It functions well in all gears but, when I go from park or neutral to drive, there's a delay of about 5 seconds before the transmission engages.  When I go from park or neutral to reverse, there's no delay.

Any suggestions?

That happened to my old dodge spirit. Tranny shop said it needed a complete overhaul. It was worse when it was colder out. In my case it was cheaper to just buy a used tranny from a junkyard. $250.

In your case a rebuild could cost as much as $1200 for a decent one. A replacement would be about $500 for a used one but then you take a chance that it might only last a few months or less. Or it might last years.
