I have had a similar problem with a 1998 3.8L engine. The intake manifold & upper plenum (plastic upper intake manifold ) were leaking ( famous leaking Chevy's ), after repair I had the overheat problem even with a new radiator cap. The new cap was defective. Answer, pressure check the cap, new or old.

When it comes to Chevy, if I don't know the answer off the top of my head, I can find it out fairly quickly. (My entire family is a bunch of gear heads.)
