Question
I have a 1998 Chevrolet diesel pickup truck. I'm not sure of the engine size, but it is a eight cylinder engine. Also a four wheel drive. Lately it lacks power, uses a lot of fuel and black smoke comes out of the exhaust. The exhaust fumes also smell like a foundry sometimes. Do you have any idea what could be the problem. Thanks

Answer
Hi Keith,
Make sure the air filter is clean. Also, the fuel filter.

If your truck has a turbocharger, their is a possibility it is bad.

There is a recall campaign on some injector pumps extended to 10 year, 100,000 miles, I believe.
Have your local dealer run your vin number, and see if yours is included. You might even find some information on Google.

I have been maintaining a fleet of approximately 55 light, medium and heavy vehicles for over 20 years. Most are 4X4 pickups and off road fire fighting trucks. Some medium duty trucks. Some military light trucks. I can answer most questions concerning 4X4 engine, drive line, suspension, electrical, and fuel, both diesel and gasoline. Ford, GM, and Dodge, old and new, but prefferably not newer than 99.
