Question
What would cause engine to inconsistantly have smoke from exhaust on start up and cause excess oil consumption.Does not do it all the time.

Answer
Hi Richard...well on start up i would suspect that you have some bad valve seals and oil consumption would suggest bad rings...if not too bad yet. try a bottle of lucas oil treatment...it will slow it down...does engine have a lot of blowby...remove oil cap and run engine put hand over oil spout...do you feel pressure comming out..or see oil smoke.. check for a bad PCV .. if open it could allow engine to suck up oil from the rocker and burn it....hope this helps
