Question
I resently bought this van. Everything seemed to be going great except 1 thing. The steering was hard to turn. My husband who seems to 'think' he can fix cars said it was the power steering pump. He 'attempted' to replace it, now only to find #1 it is still NOT turning right, #2 It is leaving a puddle when I stop at a stop light or a train, #3 and now my check engine light is on (which it never was prior to this). What may be the problem and what should I do to get it fixed? Do you have an estimate of the cost to get it done PROFESSIONAL?
Thank you very Much
Brittany

Answer
Hi Brittany....when you say not turning right do you mean that it will not turn or it is hard to turn....i would suggest that you have someone look at the rack, if rack is ok check for steering bind in the upper strut mounts...as far as leak goes could be line loose or cracked maybe missing O ring when he installed new pump...and if it is leaking that would turn on check engine light as there is a sensor for the power steering. also check to make sure he didn't knock off any plug ins when changing pump...as far as pricing that. in canada where i am, upper strut mounts are approx 150.00 each and up and about 3 hrs labour to change them. if it's the rack it can be upwards of 500.00 and a couple hours to change... mind you this is a guess based on previous jobs i have done...chances are it is the upper strut mounts.... hope this helps
