Question QUESTION: Pulled intake to check possible broken intake gaskets.Lower intake gaskets were found to be broken at water passages.Pulled push rods to replace lower intake gaskets.When replacing push rods did not realize they where different lengths.Tightend down the rocker arms and replaced the valve covers.Reassembled all electrical and water connections.The next morning tried to start engine. The engine turned over slowly heard what sounded to be a back fire, but would not start.Pulled valve cover on the front side of the engine,and found some push rods to be bent.Have pulled all push rods since.Found four of the push rods bent.Went to buy new push rods.The salesman said I should do a compression check before replacing push rods.Was told if no compression engine was not worth fixing.How much compression should there be?
ANSWER: You should see nothing less than 100 psi.
that being said , you need to install the new push rods to do a proper
compression test.
the intake gasket is very common on these engines , as is putting
the push rods in the wrong locations.

QUESTION: How do I know which push rod goes where?
Answer The intake pushrods are marked with yellow stripes and are 5 3/4 inches long.
Exhaust pushrods are marked with green stripes and are 6 inches long.
The odds are that you did not damage the engine. and yes install the pushrods
before doing the compression test
