Chevrolet Repair/Cavalier fast idle on start

Question
In the past few days, when I first start my 1991 Chevy Cavalier, 2.2, the engine races more than it has in the past. After perhaps 10 - 15 seconds the idle slows down, but the overly fast idle when the car is first started has me concerned.

After it slows down, I can put the car in reverse, back out of the driveway and head up the road without ever touching ths gas. When stopped, the car seems to idle normally at this point, but I have to keep my foot on the break to avoid movement. Take my foot off the break and the car will start moving without touching the gas.

Recently I replaced the ERG valve.

What do you think the problem may be.

Answer
Hi Jerry... could be several things.... check to see if you have a restricted air filter. vacum leaks, try cleaning the idle air control. using a good air intake cleaner. i would suspect a vac leak, make sure when you replaced the egr that you didn't knock off a vac line while doing it...hope this helps
