Chevrolet Repair/Chevy S 10 grinding

Question
I have a 2003 Chevy S10 4WD Pickup with a V6 and automatic transmission.  It has about 38000 miles on it.  Recently I have been hearing a grinding noise when I shift from Park to Drive or Reverse.  It also grinds a little bit as I take my foot off the brake right after I shift from Park to Drive.  What could this problem be? Is it major? How much does it usually cost to fix it?

Answer
Hi Chris, check to see that there is  delay in the shift motor for the 4x4...does it do that in 4 wheel hi or low... disconnect the plug for the shift motor on the transfer case and see if it still does it. if it does not check the 4x4 module and see if it is working properly.also check fluid level in both trans and transfer case....it sounds like you have some sort of delay between the trans engauging and the transfer case....hope this helps
