Question
I have a 93 c1500 chevy with 225K miles.  The transmission developed a whine around 180K most noticable in park and quietens down when driven.  I then changed the trans filter and fluids. (didn't stop whine though)  Problem now is in the past week when you start the truck their is a terrible clunking noise in trans but its stops(not as noticeable) when you put the truck in drive.  Will ocassionally here it when at idle also.
Any suggestions greatley appreciated.

Answer
Hi Greg,
I would remove the inspection cover from the bottom, and see if the torque converter mounting bolts are loose on the flex plate.

But it is liable to be the pump in the transmission, as that may also be the cause of the whine.
But for sure, check those bolts first.

I have been maintaining a fleet of approximately 55 light, medium and heavy vehicles for over 20 years. Most are 4X4 pickups and off road fire fighting trucks. Some medium duty trucks. Some military light trucks. I can answer most questions concerning 4X4 engine, drive line, suspension, electrical, and fuel, both diesel and gasoline. Ford, GM, and Dodge, old and new, but prefferably not newer than 99.
