Expertise
I have been maintaining a fleet of approximately 55 light, medium and heavy vehicles for over 20 years. Most are 4X4 pickups and off road fire fighting trucks. Some medium duty trucks. Some military light trucks. I can answer most questions concerning 4X4 engine, drive line, suspension, electrical, and fuel, both diesel and gasoline. Ford, GM, and Dodge, old and new, but prefferably not newer than 99.

Chevrolet Repair - Truck not running when hot

Expert: Van - 11/15/2005

Question
I have a 1988 4X4 Chevy 1500 with a 305. The truck will start fine when cold and run for about 5 minutes. Then is dies as if losing spark, but the spark is there and tested OK. it will restart when holding foot to the floor, back fires and black smoke. if I let it cool down 100% it will repeat. I was told it can the Electronic spark control, what do you think

Answer
Hi Robert,
It is probably electronic, but I would suspect the mass airflow sensor, or the throttle position sensor, although there are several more possibilities also.
Don't just run out and buy those things. Get hold of a Motors, or Mitchell manual, and go through the troubleshooting chart.
