Answer
Hello Artur,
The fuse is in the charging circuit to the battery, and that is probably why it was dead.
But if it is starting ok, there is no need for the second battery, and won't hurt anything to run without it.
If it were a diesel engine, more power is needed to crank, but unless you have a lot of electric accessories, like a stereo, rear air conditioner, entertainment center, and more, you can get along just fine with one battery.

I have been maintaining a fleet of approximately 55 light, medium and heavy vehicles for over 20 years. Most are 4X4 pickups and off road fire fighting trucks. Some medium duty trucks. Some military light trucks. I can answer most questions concerning 4X4 engine, drive line, suspension, electrical, and fuel, both diesel and gasoline. Ford, GM, and Dodge, old and new, but prefferably not newer than 99.
