I paid almost $1800 for the water pump on my  '98 Cavalier 2.4L Convertible.  I got several estimates and they were all within $200 of the $1800 price.  Apparently the engine has to be removed to get at the water pump!  If you can get it done for $960, I'd go for it!

the water pump on the 2.2 is only $18.56 after tax at oreilly's and is not hard to get to so they way over priced you i am a novice mechanic and i put mine in in about 3 hour in the dark laying in gravel
